This weekend saw flocks of eager lawn bowlers make their way to the Cambridge Bowling Club to compete in the inaugural St Ives Cup. Having been running for seven years, the St Ives Cup has grown to be a hotly contested tournament – could it be the first prize of $2400 that draws in the crowds, or perhaps it’s the banter from St Ives’ own Neil Bolton. Regardless of what draws the contestants in, the one fact that we all know to be true is that all competitors have a blast at the St Ives Cup.
This year’s competition was no different. Held on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April, Perth put on a stunner of a day with the sun shining and only a few clouds. Having just checked the weather forecast for the following weekend to see reports that Perth is expecting record-levels of rainfall, it appears the date selected was absolutely perfect.
Along with the first place prize, there were also cash prizes for second place right through to eighth. The happy faces of the winners were hard to miss at the awards ceremony. We expect that half of the conversations going on were ways to improve in time for the next St Ives Cup. St Ives duo Neil Bolton and Libby Bridge were on hand to present the winners of the St Ives Cup with their prizes.
The Commonwealth Games had been running for the two weeks prior to the St Ives Cup, ensuring that the blood in the veins of all competitors was fueled with the desire to take out the top prize and be crowned the champion. There were whispers of training for the next Commonwealth Games in 2022 in which case, next year’s event will be even bigger as training ramps up.
